These days it seems like news about CBD is flooding our inbox, our news feeds and might even be the topic of conversation amongst friends. So, let’s begin with what it is and what it isn’t. Your clients may be somewhat aware of CBD and its suggested uses. There is a minefield of misconceptions. Since YOU are the guide in their wellness journey, let’s begin. First, what is CBD?
WHAT IS CBD?
CBD stands for Cannabidiol, Say it outloud with me, it’s fun. CAN-NA-BI-DI-OL.
It is a non-intoxicating naturally occurring compound in the hemp plant. Hemp is legal and has been grown in America since colonial times. Hemp went into the production of paper, rope, and lamp fuel. Here is some trivia: Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence on hemp paper!
In parts of the Americas, hemp was legal tender and could be used to pay taxes.

In the fields, the hemp plant could be mistaken for marijuana since they are both members of the cannabis family. The main difference between the two is in chemical composition, specifically in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the chemical responsible for marijuana’s psychological effect. Marijuana, as sold, contains anywhere from 5-30% THC content. Hemp, on the other hand, has a maximum THC level of 0.3%. In other words, you can’t get the psychoactive “high.” No “Reefer Madness.” However, CBD does have the ability to act on cannabinoid receptors in our brains. We’ll explain, in simplified terms, how CBD works in the next section.
HOW CBD WORKS
It’s undeniable, the human brain is one of the most elegant and powerful organic things on the planet. Much remains a mystery but, in recent years, we know so much more about how the brain actually functions because of the hard work of neuroscientists and advances in brain imaging. Your three pounds of brain is a complex web of interactive neurons. Geographies, territories, and intersecting roadways are useful metaphors for what’s inside. Neural pathways, the roads, are never fixed but rather form and reshape over a lifetime.
The cannabinoids interact with the receptors, much like a lock and key. The receptor is the lock and the cannabinoid molecule is the key – when the cannabinoid “key” attaches to the receptor “lock” located on the cell wall, a reaction is triggered resulting in an effect on the brain and body. Since the body seeks homeostasis, or balance, CBD acts to maintain that balance.
Your body works continuously to monitor important levels and functions in your body. Is your temperature too high, too low, or just right? Are your hormone levels what they should be? Is your heart beating too fast? Do you need fuel or rest? Is too much of something building up in your bloodstream or inside of your cells? When something is operating outside of the right range, your body activates the ECS to help correct it. So when you’re really hot and begin to sweat, thank your ECS for working to cool you down. Stomach growling? That’s your ECS helping remind you to eat because you need fuel.
